LO1: Promo Tasks

  1. The target audience is for 18 year olds because it is telling you how to vote and you can start at 18 however it could also  be targeted as  people older than that who didn't register to vote when they turned 18. It is also targeted at the people of Birmingham because it gives the contact details of the city council.
  2. The audience are addressed formally because it is a promo for voting and needs to be professional so the audience take what they are saying seriously therefore teacher to student.
  3. Editing techniques such as cut are used in this promo and shot reverse shot when talking to the polling woman
  4. This is an informative piece because it is all factual

  1. This video differs to the Birmingham city council one because the man talking is using received pronunciation as he is talking to a wider audience and he is talking at you instead of to you
  2. The similarities between the two promos is that they are both talking about something which has facts in and both use music
  3. The differences are that rolls royce uses graphics throughout the whole video and the difference in accent, also the camera work is different.

LO1: Comparing Film Trailers

The film trailer I am comparing is the film 'Split' the director and producer is M. Night Shymalan. The films production company was Blinding Edge Pictures/ Blumhouse Productions and was distributed by Universal Pictures.

In the film trailer for the movie split the purpose of it is to entertain their 15-25 audience range both male and female. There isn't many title and graphics for example the actors playing it only "Split" at the end of the trailer connoting what the film is called therefore reminding the audience. The graphics throughout the trailer show the location as very abandoned and dangerous this is telling the audience what type of genre it is- a horror/thriller. The transitions in the beginning of the trailer start off with a fade in to connote the beginning of the trailer, also there’s a lot of use with cuts as it shows what’s happening and as this film is very fast paced it is the most common used transition throughout the trailer.  Non continuity is used in this trailer in order to keep the audience engaged as it cross cuts very quickly to different parts of the story this engages the target audience because the film makers already know the demographics of the target audience so what type of film they like which would be horror and all trailers for horror are quite similar in which angles/shots/ sound. The use of actors in the trailer get a wider target audience also because fans of the actors in it would come see the film therefore this also engages with the targets audience. There is some non-diegetic sound in the trailer when the actors aren't speaking for example incidental music which is most commonly used in horror films to enhance on the atmosphere. However the use of diegetic sound for example dialogue is mostly used by the protagonist to show a sense of patriarchy that he is in charge of these three girls and they are seen as objects in his plan to escape.

Mise en Scene wise there is a lot of different costumes in the trailer because the protagonist has over 23 different personalities therefore the director is trying to get as many in the trailer as possible to show the audience what the film is about. The three main girls who are kidnapped in the trailer are all dressed in typical female clothing to represent that they are just normal girls. As Split is a horror/thriller the lighting used throughout most of the trailer is low key as it is used to nerve the audience however, a couple scenes throughout the trailer show the location is a more high key lighting at around 1 minute 28 seconds this is there to represent confusion to the audience and contrast between the light and dark.

This promo is suitable for its target audience because it isn’t using any bad language or reference to drugs/ discrimination etc. it just shows some violence of the protagonist imprisoning these young girls and gun use but these conventions make it suitable for its film classification of a 15. It is also suitable to entertain the audience with a promo because it is very quick paced therefore getting the audience excited about what is going to happen giving them escapism for a short time out of reality which was theorised by Denis Mqauil. In comparison a music video is good to promote the release of a song because it is gathering its target audience through the conventions of what is happening in the video which will have to be suitable for the artist’s target audience and match with the genre of music it is, it would also use escapism like the Split trailer depending on what the of music it is as it is allowing their audience to forget about everything else and zone into the music.

The film trailer I am comparing is Bad Neighbours 2: Sorority Rising, the director is Nicholas Stoller and was produced by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver. Universal Pictures distributed bad neighbours 2, which is the same as the first comparison movie 'Split'.

In the film trailer for Bad Neighbours 2 the purpose of it is to entertain their 15-25 audience similar to split. In the film trailer for the movie bad neighbours two, there is a few titles throughout the trailer for example at 0.43 onwards it starts with 'NU NEIGHBOURS'. This engages the target audience because it is commonly seen in comedy genres and at the end saying the name of the film and 'Summer 2016' reminding the audience of when it is due to come out therefore getting more excited about it. The graphics in the trailer show the storyline as it almost like a comedy action movie with the sorority girls fighting with the married couple this shows a sense of matriarchy in the trailer because the girls are seen as vicious and how men should be stereotyped as. The graphics show women in bikinis to be seen as hot this is attracting a more male audience, however then Zac Efron topless this will the attract a more female audience therefore Bad Neighbours 2 have a quite wide target audience. The editing techniques used in this trailer are non-continuity however it isn’t as cross cut as horror films or action like 'Split', because it is there to be telling a story as it is a comedy it needs to have alot of dialogue in to attract the right target audience. The trailer is using editing techniques such as fading in with the film ratings sign and then cuts to the sorority girls with non-diegetic sound in the background playing 'Feel so close' which is an upbeat song to match with the atmosphere of the film trailer. There’s also a few cuts used in the trailer to connote to another sequence however there is not as many as other genres of films would be. The use of big actors throughout the trailer engage the target audience because they will have a large following group who would watch most films with them in. There is a large amount of diegetic sound in this trailer because the audience wouldn’t really know what was happening without it as action films can get away with it as there’s a lot of fighting therefore more non diegetic sound.

Mise en Scene for the promo for 'Bad neighbours 2: Sorority Rules have many different conventions. The costumes used in this trailer are women in bikinis and short clothing to represent them as a stereotypical female and that the film was in summer and released in summer. In comparison to 'Split' where the females were dressed appropriate for what genre of film it was, however the men in the trailer were all dressed appropriate except Zac Efron who played a major part in the film he was seen as the helper and also the eye candy for the female audience. The lighting in this promo was all high key as this is a convention for comedy genres it usually has no effect on the overall structure of the film but it is representing the film as a comedy and at it is based in summer it gives off this vibe due to the lighting. There is little time when it shows the location in a darker setting unless there was a party going on or at night, which has no dramatic effect on the promo.

This promo is suitable for its target audience of 15+ because it has little violence unless it was done in a comedic way and no major swearing, which is not suitable for a younger audience therefore why the film has a BBFC rating of 15+. Therefore, the promo is suitable to entertain the audience via the comedic values. In comparison, a music video is good to promote the release of a new song because it has less conventions of a film trailer so less bbfc rules would be used, depending on what genre of music it was. Also if the music video was a 15 like this trailer for Bad neighbors 2 it would differ in what type of conventions it used for example if it was rap you would see money, chains, mansions and a luxury lifestyle these conventions aren’t used in a film trailer however they would both be suitable for their target audience

LO1: Understand the purpose of audio visuals promos

You need to understand the different conventions associated with products created for different purposes.

  1. Entertain (e.g film trailer)
  2. Inform (e.g public service information)
  3. Educate (e.g online software turorials)
  4. Promote/Advertise (e.g music videos/ idents)

Find an example of each of these audio visual promo types and identify,
  • The type of product
  • The target audience
  • Where it is distributed
  • How visuals and audio are used to communicate the purpose
  • The length of the promo

1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZ5tqzw841s is a film trailer to entertain the audience. The target audience is 15- 25 and could be for both male and female. Baywatch was distributed by paramount pictures. The visuals in the trailer show alot of male nudity and sex appeal to entertain the audience and the audio is more diegetic sound of the characters talking and non dietetic of Biggie smalls playing in the background. The length of the official trailer is 2 minutes 37 seconds

2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8syQeFtBKc
This is a PSA advert to inform the audience about gun violence. The target audience for this advert is school children as this is an American advert gun use is big there also with school shootings e.g what happened in the video so it is directing it at around 11-18 year olds both male and female. The visuals and audio create the purpose to inform towards the end of the video when it reveals the twist what probably came to a shock to the audience and is telling you to look out for gun violence and that it can really happen anywhere. The length of the promo is 2minutes 29 seconds

3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHYwG-DgI3E. This video is an online software tutorial on how to create your own screen captured video tutorials for free. The target audience is 16-35 as it is a wide target audience to do with both genders who use computers for work or entertainment etc. This video is distributed on youtube. The visuals for this tutorial is a screen video of the youtuber and dialogue of the man going through what to do in the video. The length of the video is 15 minutes 24 seconds

4.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JZom_gVfuw. This is a music video for Juicy by the Notorious B.I.G, the target audience for this music video and his music is of a C2DE and more of a male tragte audience who listen to rap so around 13-30 as this also has quite a big target audience because it is a music video. The video was distributed on Youtube for his fans to see and the song on CDs etc. The audio is used to communicate the purpose to advertise because he is singing the song and when his target audience hear it they might buy it online therefore promoting him. The visuals also communicate the purpose to advertise because it is a stereotypical rap video therefore attracting a wider audiencewhich will promote the product more. The length of 'Juicy' is 4 minutes 11 seconds which is the longest out of the other ones I have studied because it is a song

LO1: Comparing music videos

The music video i am comparing is Big Poppa by Notrious BIG, it was produced by Sean Combs (Puff Daddy) and The single was certified platinum by the RIAA and sold 800,000 copies domestically.

In the music video for Big Poppa the target audience would be a wider audience than for film trailers so a more male C2DE 14-30 year olds interested in hip hop. In the Big Poppa video the conventions of it is Patroichy as Biggie seems to look like he owns the women at the casino and is in control. The titles and graphics says the name of the song and the singer engaging with the target audience, it shows Notorious B.I.G and his 'crew' at a casino with lots of money around as this is a convention of a rap music video with a group of women around seen as objects with the men flirting with them this is to attract the 'male gaze', and a large group of men outside at the end while Biggie is walking past like he is someone people look up to. Theres also other convention which fit the rap genre as Diddy is wearing a chain round his neck and everyone looks like they are wearing quite expensive clothes as they are prestige within their music. The editing in the video is non continuity  and cross cuts to different parts to match the beat of the music. The use of Biggie being in his\ own video and other famous people such a puff daddy engages the target audience as it is has another rap legend in it which the target audience would probably like the music of his too.

The mise en scene in this music video for example location show most of it happening at a casino this shows to the audience that he has alot of money from starting doing music because beofre he wasnt as privelidged also with some permormers wearing chains and money spotted around the video also show how his life has changed. The costmes in this promo show alot of masculinity because all the men in it are wearing quite expsneive clothes and Biggie is staring diretly into the camera while singing to become more personal with the audience, hes also seen with his 'gang' this connotes power to the audience and that they shouldnt be messed with. The lighting in this trailer is high key to connote happiness however when they are dancing in te casino/club it is a mixture because theres coloured lights used this makes it match to the beat of the music depending on the lighting. The props used in this video were the use of loads of champagne bottles/ different alcohols and tons of money in peoples hands this connotes to the audience that all of his friends are well off and him himself is a ladies man. Theres also a hot tub in the casino they are in which is also connoting how well of they are and P Diddy is in there with a bunch of girls showing that they are popular with the lades because of how famous and rich they are.

The music video I am analysing is  'How deep is you love' by Calvin Harris and Disciples, it was produced by Calvin Harris and Disciples, the purpose of this music video was to entertain there ABC1 14- 21 female and male audience. As the pop/dance genre has more of a female target range this video for example didn't, using a top model to star in the video would attract more males to the video also to see Gigi in it.

In the Calvin Harris video 'How deep is your love' it shows the conventions of a pop/dance genre of music as the graphics show Gigi Hadid at a club relationg to the dance genre of music as it is quick paced and has flashing and quite trippy graphics to engage their audience, conventions of dance videos also talk about love which this video is about. However both videos have two things in common the use of women in seductive clothing to attract to that male audience. In the music video the transitions are very quick paced to match the beat of the music and cross cuts quite alot to different sections as Gigi looking like she is on drugs on the video which is also another conevntion of dance music videos, so it is trying to show what she is feeling throughout the video. The use of having Gigi Hadid in the music video creates a bigger target audience range so not just a song for people who are within the target audience of dance/pop music but those who are a fan of her and just watch the video for her as it mentions in the Youtube comments. The camera angles are mostly medium close ups of Gigis face to show her expression, and only reviling abit of the surroundings which makes the audience focus on her face more.

Mise en scene wise for example the costumes were showing a good example of what people dress like when they are going out to a club. Gigi Hadid was in a white dress which connoted her innocence in the video and she almost looked like she didn't know what was going on, also she stays in the same outfit when she's on the boat with dolphins surrounding it and everyone else on it are wearing high end clothes, sunglasses and expensive looking jewellery which show that they are wealthy. The location in this video played a big part in setting the scene to show conventions of a dance video, for example she was at a club in a lively atmosphere with several things going on simultaneously, this is so the audience can relate the video to their own lives. The use of the vibrant colours and flashing lights gives off the sense of a good atmosphere to the audience. The props in this video were to show the lifestyle of Gigi and many other famous people, living the perfect life on a yacht surrounded by jet skis and dolphins with perfect blue water this is showing conventions of a dance/ pop video. The use not having a lot of characters show that Gigi is more powerful and it focuses more on her than anyone else.
